Baby Girl is the sweetest most wonderful dog that you would ever know but I never said she was real smart. She's got swollen lips, she's got big sores on her ankles and on the tip of her tail. Travis took her in to see Dr Turner this morning and she said she thinks it all looks like inflamed bites. Her lymph nodes are swollen in her back legs where she's the most affected.
All I can think is I have a fire ant mound right next to the gate that I'm constantly hosing away to get rid of them. It's in the yard so I can't use poison but it seems that she lays there and gets bit and doesn't move 😳
She's in antibiotics and steroids to help but if anyone has any natural tricks to kill these things I'm all ears.... ... See MoreSee Less
Diatomaceous Earth should do the trick for any bugs you may have (ants or fleas!) and as long as you get food grade it's harmless to pets and people! www.diatomaceousearth.com/
Nematodes, you can buy them at almost any nursery. The ants will leave and stay away. So will grubs and other undesirable ground insects
Grits,..ants eat them and explode,I'm told..all i know for sure is, I put grits on the mound, and they're gone in a couple of days...don't know if they die or move...don't care as long as they're gone...
My great grandmother would get a propane tank and set it up and boil water and pour it on the mound she'd do that five or six times and it would never come back.. that was in MT idk about here in TX
For an even more effective way to get rid of fire ants, drench the mounds with a citrus oil and soap solution, a combination that’s repeatedly proved effective. In controlled studies conducted by Texas A&M University entomologists, fire ant mounds still showed no activity nearly a month after the researchers had drenched the mounds with a mixture of 1 1⁄2 ounces of Medina Orange Oil, 3 ounces of Dawn liquid soap and 1 gallon of water. A compound in citrus oil, d-limonene, breaks down the ants’ exoskeletons and causes them to suffocate. The commercial product Orange Guard Fire Ant Killer — approved for use in organic agriculture by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) — also contains orange oil. (For other approved products, check the OMRI website.)
I've poured straight jalapeno juice on the mounds before and they went away. Unless you have Mexican fire ants, of course, :)
I've recently heard of using a vinegar/water solution. But I think cornmeal is the tried and tested method. Also, I read that hosing the mound only encourages more mounds to form. The ants don't drown, they spread.
Try spreading a pound of cheap coffee on the ground. Broadcast it enough that they have to leave the yard rather than move farther in. Canadian trick for regular ants anyway. If you like your neighbor give them some coffee too.
One of my old bosses taught me this trick - it requires two active ant hills. Take a shovelful of ants from one mound and plop it down onto the other mound. Take a shovelful from that mound and plop it down onto the first mound. The ants will go to war and kill off one another. I've done this several times inside the fenced yard where the dogs are and it works.
I know how it feels to get bitten by those rotten little ants so I can imagine how it feels to the dogs. Probably half of the hot spots mine have are due to ants. They roll on their backs in the grass. Hope she's better very soon.
Poor Baby Girl.....I have one of those at my house, too. He loves stretching out on the warm pavement and is oblivious to what is biting him. He ends up with ant bites on his tummy and here comes the Benadryl and sometimes an antibiotic. I just hate ant beds!!!!!!!!!!
I just used this method in a potted plant and it worked great... I skipped the molasses but followed the rest. "Citrus oil, including orange and lemon oil, is toxic to ants and won't harm your garden plants. Many natural insecticides contain orange oil, but you can make your own using 3/4 cup of orange essential oil, 1 tablespoon of molasses, 1 tablespoon of dish soap and 1 gallon of water, recommends the Urban Harvest website. Spray the mixture on and around garden plants to get rid of the ants in your garden and in your home. If you don't have orange oil, simply boil the rinds of five or six oranges in water for 15 minutes until soft. Place the rinds in a food processor along with the liquid used to boil them, to create a slurry that you can pour around your garden plants."
Poor Baby Girl, I can't imagine how bad she fills and still dorsn't complain. I hope she heals quickly and feels better soon. You might have to put a temporary fence around the ant hill and kill those nuggets somehow.
Poor sweet baby. I hope Dr D gets her feeling better very soon. And I hope you can get these hateful fire ants annilhilated. I'm not sure they serve any kind of purpose other than tormenting animals and humans. (at least none I have heard)
Cayenne pepper!! Won't hurt your pets and will get rid of mounds of red or fire ants. Pour all around mound (without getting bitten) and they carry it inside and die. Promise this works. I live in Texas and that's what I use.
I have heard a tea kettle full of boiling water works. May have to repeat in a couple of days but is supposed to kill the queen and most ants in the mound. I would do it early in the morning and at dusk so that majority of ants are in the mound.
Have you tried diatomaceous earth on the mound- it works great in Syracuse NY but buy the food grade type- safe for kids and dogs. This substance is in most grains- keeps most bugs at bay.
Organic Orange Oil works great. Got rid of all ours with. Will not hurt animals. Poor straight into the mound. MUST be gotten from an organics only garden center.
FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth! Must be good grade! Kills the ants and harmless to pets. You can even you it in their food to kill worms and parasites in their body.
We live in central Texas and have sprinkled cinnamon in and around the mound and then dumped boiling water on it. Works like a charm
white vinegar will get rid of them! i use it all around my house and outside and it doesn't hurt my bully or birdies outside
Boiling water in the mound steams them and usually kills the queen and all the eggs, non toxic for dogs obviously. I would boil two big pots and pour them back to back.
Corn meal. They eat it and when it swells it will kill them. She needs lots of sugars and love. Poor baby girl
My husband uses orange oil in our veggie garden. Maybe try that? Should tell how to mix it on the bottle, you get it in the gardening section at Home Depot or Lowes.
I've always been told cinnamon and have used it inside my home to avoid chemicals. They seem to disappear pretty quickly after that!

This is Marmalade and she has been brought to the Ranch today by her family as they leave to go on holiday. Marmalade had to get up at 04.00 and was not terribly impressed by that. Have fun, Miss Gorgeous xx❤️
For a girl that was brutally ripped from her beauty rest at the unholy hour of 4am, Miss Marmalade looks wonderful! Enjoy your vacay at the ranch!
We were so worried about leaving her even though I knew y'all were amazing. I had the baby throwing a fit and the big girl walking her in. She had to check out the place before leaving Marmie. Haha Marm wasn't thrilled about the 4am wake up call.

We never offer ourselves up when something like this comes around - cause that seems weird - but since Cate Bernhardt was kind enough to break the seal on this opportunity on our behalf in the wee hours of pre-dawn this morning - I'll sound the Horn of Jericho
We don't always agree on "stuff" here - but Mike Rowe is unilaterally venerated to near-deity status by every single person involved with our rescue.
He's the living personification of the sum total of all the hopes and dreams that the founders of this nation had for it's future.
I'd be humbled and honored to work with him on any project in any capacity.

- WesHow to Pay it Forward by Returning the Favor
If you haven’t heard, (and even if you have,) Facebook is getting into the content game, and I’m involved. The new show is called Returning the Favor, and like most everything I’ve done historically, I’m relying on viewers to help me program the show. In other words, Help!
The concept is aggressively simple – find people who are doing something decent in their community, and do something decent for them - something that allows them to do more of whatever it is they’re already doing. In other words, we're looking for ways to help more Bloody-Do-Gooders do more bloody good.
So, if you know of someone slightly better than average – someone determined to make the world a less divisive, more inhabitable, or slightly improved place - tell me about them here.
And please, hurry. Producers and executives, desperate for new and exciting content, are perusing this page with boundless optimism.
Much obliged –

Lone Star Ranch in Anna, Texas are the people you are looking for. They not only rescue the dogs, but they see that they have all the medical attention they need, which is a lot, and they keep them until they are ready for their "furever" home. There is nothing but love, good food and more love at their place. Instead of me writing a book, just pull up their web sight and you will be amazed. There is no doubt in my mind that they deserve to be given this honor.

Lone Star Dog Ranch in Anna Tx. Just a peek at the page and you will see there is no place more deserving. They speak for those who can't and perform complete miracles with their love and compassion for both the dogs they rescue and the people they place these animals with!
Lone Star Dog Ranch in Anna Texas!!!!! They are dog's life savers, literally! Especially for puppy mill dogs. They get dogs back to health and adopt them out. Many are saved from euthanization, horrible diseases. I would love to do what they do. Check out there website and stories. They operate on donations a lot. They deserve anything and everything.
I can't say enough good about the caring, compassionate, selfless people at Lonestar Dog Ranch ! They do everything in their power,to help as many of these abused animals they can! They deserve recognition, if only to bring in more donations, so they can save more abused animals!
This is the comment I put on his page. The Lone Star Dog Ranch Rescue in Anna, Tx is the best Rescue I have ever seen or heard of. They have loyal followers across the United States and other countries. Most of their rescues come from puppy mills; but they will rescue most any dog in dire need. We need your help to spotlight the need to adopt rather than shop. We need to put puppy mills out of business.
