About Blue Bell Ice Cream:

This dog belonged to a “breeder” I use that term very, very lightly. He said he doesn’t know what’s wrong with her, he doesn’t think she could be pregnant because the only male he has right now is 7 months old and she looks like she would be 2 months pregnant with this belly looking like this.
He said he doesn’t have any money to take care of her and said he will just take her to the shelter and have them “gas her to sleep”

Yes we said we will take her and sent Ricky to go get her, he drove her to the ER and we then learned that she is not pregnant but instead she has right side heart failure, is of course heart worm positive and her belly is full of fluid from her heart unable to function properly, because it’s filled with worms killing her heart.
They started treatment for that right away, her bloodwork otherwise looks good. They consulted with A&M, and said worst case we would end up there but not at that point right now. They tapped her abdomen and drained one gallon of fluid, 5 pounds off of her, I’ve included her X-rays before and a picture of her after where her whole body is just sunken and like a skeleton.
The Dr is calling cardiologist @trinity mills to see if we can get her in this week. Dr says that her heart will be permanently damaged and she will be on lifelong meds, but says she thinks we can get her stabilized. She said depending on what cardiology finds will have more info as far as if she’s blocked up with worms. If any of you remember Miracle Marcus you will recall what a dog with Caval syndrome looks like. Hopefully she’s not that far gone but this does look bad for her, we will do all we can to try and save her life.
We could use some help if you’re able donate to her care.
I asked Ricky what do you want to name her and he said Blue Bell Ice Cream, so that her name. She will be staying with Jenn, she needs a medical professional tending to her and there is no one better than Jenn.
We will be seeing what we can do with cardiology as soon as we can get her seen and go from there, but Dr Reno says if she doesn’t respond to Lasix and her body just fills back up with fluid we need to be fair to her and let her go and stop the suffering.
Lordy how on earth is this a dog that you have as a breeder dog, I’ll simply never understand, and never will it not infuriate me.

Mary took Blue Bell Ice Cream into the ER at Texas A & M with her having some trouble breathing. They put her in oxygen and cardiology has assessed her. She has pneumonitis which is inflammation of the lungs due to the heart worms. They are giving her meds to help, and they are adjusting her heart meds in addition to giving her some meds for her blood pressure. Thankfully she has no fluid in her abdomen, so that has not come back. The echo shows a low heart worm amount. So it seems that her body doesn’t tolerate heart worms. They think with med adjustments, some steroids they can wean her off of oxygen and send her home, but not until she’s stable. After heartworm treatment they can assess what the permanent damage will be. She will be staying with foster mom Mary down near Houston and her vet will be handling her care.

Blue Bell is in a holding pattern waiting for her HW treatment to start in a couple of weeks. She is getting healthier with no reoccurrence of the ascites or breathing difficulty that threatened her life.
After her treatment, we are hoping there is no permanent heart damage and that she can live a full healthy life.
She is a happy little girl and very sassy. She fits in well with my other pups and grandsons.
