Today was Challenger’s ride to his forever home. I’m not sure who hit the bigger jackpot, Challenger or his new family!!! As Renee would say…sit down and let me tell you a little story!!
Challenger came to my family a terrified, shut down little boy who didn’t really engage with anything or anyone…you might remember the video of him frozen not wanting to move out of fear when we took him out of his pen. That was the pup I took in to see Dr. Bianucci (Dr. B sees all the Lone Star dogs that come north), scared, cowering and overwhelmed. Dr. B was so taken with him she just kept telling him how handsome he was and talking to him. Next was his neuter and the call after the neuter…Dr. B told me how great he was, how she couldn’t get over how much he had come out of his shell, and how handsome he was. She told me about her older dog who was very sick and would love Challenger to be hers, but her older dog needed her attention.
Next came his re check and Challenger was all out of his shell and marching around like a boss, and once again Dr. B was very smitten with him and so clearly struggling with her older dog being quite ill.
Well as luck would have it I would see Dr. B again in the next couple of weeks when Dakota came barreling into the rescue. I go walking in with a very scared and very sweet red bear, I get one foot in the door and she asks me if Challenger has a home.
She has been telling her family about him and showing them pictures and she really thought he was for them!!!!!!!! This realization was very bittersweet for her as she was losing her sweet older dog. Dr. Bianucci and her family moved forward with the adoption of Challenger and I happily delivered him to them this morning for Mother’s Day.
I can honestly say Challenger rescued Dr. B as much as she rescued him…it is truly a match made in heaven. Rescue is hard rewarding work.
We bring these dogs into our homes and teach them everything but the most important thing we teach them is they are worthy of love and how to receive that love. Challenger didn’t know that a human could show love a month ago, and today he knows how to receive that love and has not only an amazing veterinarian for a mom, but so much love from his new family.
This is what we do.
Isn’t she adorable? This sweet Frenchie is being fostered by a great volunteer of ours, Nicole, in Chicago.
Welcome to the good life, Challenger!
