This is going to be a bit of a long story for this adoption so if you could gather around I will explain.
About 4 years ago or so we had a pregnant mill mama that came to us named Blackberry, I’m sure many of you were with us then but lots of you were not. I raised that litter from beginning to end, the last litter for me because it is just a very hard job and it’s not something I will tackle again.
In that litter as you raise them you try not to have favorites but you always do. One of the puppies was a little girl named Cranberry, she was as dark as night, she was smart and observant the traits I always admire in a litter of pups, the one that is the onlooker…
Laura tried to push me into keeping her but I pushed away and all of the puppies were adopted and off to their forever families, including Cranberry.
She was adopted by Bryanne and Michael Atwood from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and Bryanne would share the most adorable photo’s of Cranberry who was now known as Gertie. Little pics of this adorable little baby with hats, and socks and necklaces and hair bows. Laura would always send them to me and joke “you blew it” look at that baby you should have kept. I always smiled and admired how beautiful she was and how she had the best family every who loved her dearly.
Then we got the horrible sad news that on Christmas Day Gertie had a catastrophic event with her back and IVDD and her spinal cord began dying and her mom had to let her go. Devastated sometimes just isn’t a big enough word, and poof in an instant beautiful Cranberry was gone…
We knew at some point Bryanne would be ready again to adopt but that would be for her to decide when her heart was ready. This Cake group came in and Laura wondered if she might be wanting one of the puppies but all things pointed to another dog. When dogs come in there are always certain dogs that you look at and say that one right there is my favorite. When Lava Cake came in I knew she was trouble for me, she was sassy, she was confident, she was calm, and smart and a tiny little adorable dynamo all in one package.
Laura called me one day and said she was in touch with Bryanne and had mentioned the puppies to her but she was leaning toward Lava Cake, and I said of course she would, and of course that would be perfect and have everything come full circle. Cranberry was my favorite and Lava Cake was my favorite and it seems that Bryanne and myself have some kind of cosmic energy that puts us together with dogs.
I was so happy to know that my little Lava Cake could help heal Bryanne’s heart. She said she wasn’t ready for a new puppy and she looked at Lava Cakes birthday and she was only 2 months older than Cranberry/Gertie and she said goodness this little tiny girl has lived 4 years of hell in a mill while Gertie was living a cherished life. She knew that Gertie would be happy for her to take this little girl and give her the same gift she was given but only for 4 years, Lava Cake wasn’t given opportunity for her first four years, but starting now she will have it.
Her new name will be Guinevere and they will cherish her, and I can take comfort knowing that she is exactly where she belongs and I know that very soon we will all see her on the happy tails page with necklaces, and socks and hats and I’m so happy about that.
I wish you all the best, kiss my little girl for me and give her all of my love foreverAbout Lava Cake:
