The photo of her in the shelter grabbed me from the moment I saw her. Somehow I knew we would end up rescuing her and that we did. Her family reached out to us with their personal pain of having to let her go and yesterday it was time for her to move beyond all of it and say hello to her new family.
Foster mom Beth had the adoption at her home where we sent Lessie because she was so very depressed away from a home. This is what she shared:
Lessie knows how to start the new year! She’s off to San Antonio to begin her new life with parents Karen and Matthew O’Brien. Lessie’s original name was Coco and that’s what she’ll forever be called. When Karen and Matthew arrived today for the adoption, there was an immediate attraction and bond, and Coco didn’t hesitate to get some love and attention from them. She’ll have 3 doggie siblings and 2 hedgehogs. Karen works from home as a psychologist for the veteran’s hospital and will be there to help Coco settle in. She already has a stylish collar and leash, an engraved tag, and new toys. Happy life sweet girl! You so deserve it.
We were choosing dogs to rescue and were focusing primarily on small dogs knowing that Raquel already had two Dobermans to transport, but I kept coming back to this face. I don’t know what she is, but she reminds me of a cow. I just kept saying what about Cow dog. Laura had sent in some tags on small dogs and some were available and some weren’t, so we had some space. Laura and I both voted and the cow dog was tagged.
Travis helped with intake last night and left us notes about each dog. This is what he observed with her. She is very sweet and low energy. Very tolerant of the puppy nonsense in her face from some of these new rescues and had a slightly nervous tail wag. No fleas. One tick. Pretty crusty nose and pads.
She’s definitely morbidly obese, needs to eat a half cup of dry only twice a day. She’s so fat she’s urinating on her inner belly folds and has quite the irritation and build up in her lady area. Christi said she weighted 95 pounds so she’s potentially 20-30 overweight if that’s the case.
This is the story of how we have chosen her name:
My grandmother Lessie passed away from COVID at the age of 96 in August. An animal lover her entire life, but she especially loved visits from her “grand dog” Lexie, her last years in a care facility.
Welcome to Dog Ranch Rescue Lessie aka Cow Dog

UPDATE 12/15/2020
Over the weekend on a cold rainy day our volunteer Christi brought her little boy Wyatt to the sanctuary to take Lessie out and walk her up to the Ranch so we could see who she is. We spent a few hours with her and she never moved from her spot, she is clearly a pretty shut down girl and is coming down with a cough from the shelter so we knew she would be much better off in a foster home.
In the meantime we did receive an email from her former family expressing their gratitude for us taking care of her. The Grandmother told us that she belonged to her daughter who is dealing with some issues and works 12 hour shifts 6 days a week and she felt that she deserved so much more.
She explained that she is 6 years old and the most loving sweet girl who loves car rides, loves to be cuddled and is great with children. She was heartbroken that she couldn’t take her in herself but her situation didn’t allow it either. We want to assure her that we will take great care of her and find a perfect home for her.
She left the Ranch and arrived at foster mom Beth’s house where she wagged her tail entering the home and found a big dog bed and crawled right in. Beth said she was ready to love the sadness right out of her. She is on medication for her URI and we discovered that she has a low thyroid which is a big reason she is so overweight. Lessie needs to lose about 30 pounds so that will take a while to happen but her new medication will help that a great deal.
UPDATE 12/12/2020
This big girl and her giant face captivated me when I first saw her, we came to find out after we already had tagged her that she had a home that she lost. We arent sure why but it sounded as if it was an eviction. This girl loved her family and is a very sad and depressed girl. She makes the volunteers cry each and every day, she is shut down and unhappy. We have also learned that she is already spayed. She is very overweight at around 90 pounds, Dr. Reno says she needs to lose about 30 pounds which is a lot of weight for a dog to be carrying.
What I really, really need is for you guys to help us find her a home, she is very low key, good with all of the dogs, she just needs to have a new family where she can once again feel that she belongs and isn’t lost anymore.
