Gather round I have a little goodnight story, but bring your Kleenex box with you, you will need it.
We all remember Selene being returned after getting spooked and scared on her trial run and she was sent back. We felt terrible, Selene felt terrible, and all we could do was keep trying to find the right place.
We got an email over the weekend from Katie and Matthew Hitchcock, they previously adopted 3 dogs from us, Beverly aka bonnet was a little bit of a challenge in the rescue with her cranky attitude with other dogs. Katie and Matthew have fostered dogs for a long time and are well versed in the various quirks and idiosyncrasies you find in dogs. They are undeterred and Beverly flourished with them, they also adopted their first Bordeaux Gretchen aka Kelly. When KISS was returned for being afraid of the teenage boy in the home, they reached out to see if she might be a good fit for them. Matthew and Katie don’t have any children in the home and KISS after being returned has gone to live with them, and is now known as Roxanne, you might remember this was Nana’s, Jolene and Mildreds mama. Roxanne did not miss a beat, and has fit in perfectly and happily.
The email they sent this weekend said they had followed Selene’s story and wondered if she might be a good fit for them and their pack. Travis called them on the phone to discuss all of her quirks, and they were not deterred in the slightest and said we will be there at 2:00 to adopt her.
Travis asked them to bring Nana’s mama Roxanne to be the goodwill ambassador to help Selene if she was nervous. Selene met them over the counter first and then Travis opened the half door and she ran right out to greet them like she had known them for years. Not one bark, not one bluff and instead gave Matthew a hello kiss and hug. Travis told them the shelter couldn’t even vaccinate her with her bluffing and they simply couldn’t believe it. Roxanne initiated play and Selene said sure I will happily be your friend and we could see they would get along great.
We took an adoption pic and off she went out there door as if they had always been her owner, and they had just come to pick her up and take her home.
You know sometimes things hurt us, and they are hard, but sometimes it just feels like things happen for a reason, as if it was meant to happen and if it was meant to be. It took us two times to get it right but this time Selene found where she should be and we could not be any happier about that.
I asked Travis did they have a name for her? he said I didn’t ask, Matthew said ” yep, I love her” and Travis said his brain just died right then and there. All of this info comes across to all of us who work our butts off for the rescue each and every day in a text thread, and I’m not gonna lie a lot of happy tears were shed.
It is what keeps us going, it is what heals us, we aren’t perfect, we just try real hard and sometimes it doesn’t work, and we try not to beat ourselves up even though there are people out there who want to beat us up. We have to pick ourselves up by our bootstraps and keep trying and this right here is the reason why.
About Selene:
Normally we get many emails when a Bordeaux is in the shelter near us, not this time. We had one person send us this first pic shown here where it’s hard to be sure is it a Bordeaux or is it not?
I checked the Dallas website over the weekend, she was listed but the next day she wasn’t. I assumed she was a stray and perhaps reclaimed or adopted and I moved on not thinking about her again.
Yesterday it kept popping in my head so I circled back and thought I would check again, and dammit if she wasn’t listed again just languishing in there. Yesterday Laura inquired about what was going on with her, what info did they have, is it a Bordeaux, they then sent us the behavioral notes on her, and some more photos of her obviously scared and spooky self. She is a Bordeaux, she is obviously terrified, tail tucked barking, charging people at the door. All signs of a scared dog. This called for Travis to go out and meet her, assess her, and see what she’s all about. Travis said she was very shy, very stinky and he put a leash on her and walked out the door, he asked her to jump in the car, he said she was a little nervous but she obliged, jumped in the car and looked back out the window never to return to this place she doesn’t belong and will never be at again.
I just want to give you a little insight on the process sometimes. Many times a dog like this will have people tagging us 50 times in a post, or emails letting us know about her, but somehow this girl was missed, and missed again. I’m glad I rechecked, that nagging gut of mine sometimes… or she could have been euthanized. The shelters are overrun, there is no place for the majority to go, and she seemed to slip through the cracks, she is a lucky girl, a very lucky girl indeed.
Welcome to Dog Ranch Rescue Selene
- Oh Selene… This amazing girl came from the Dallas Shelter where she was simplyterrified in the shelter environment. Luckily she has had no issues at the Sanctuary, and has even gotten to go on to the Ranch for more fun! Selene is good with all dogs, and loves toys! She is a beautiful mastiff with an awesome, silly personality. Is she yours?
