Latest Update:
I put the word out that we were looking for a local fospice home for Smoochie and I could not believe how many people we had raise their hands and offer. It was fantastic but we had to look at each opportunity carefully and decide which home would be best for Smoochie. Kristen Ramsey is the home that we selected, she is 100% on board for giving Smoochie everything she needs.
We felt with all things considered that this was the best home, very experienced Mastiff owners, they previously adopted Doyle one of our DDB’s. she has Doyle and her Boxer Magnus that are very easy dogs to bring in a new dog into the home. Smoochie needs lots and lots of medical care, she needs lots and lots of rest and she needs to sleep, sleep and sleep some more. This family lives very close to Millie and uses the same vet that we use for Millie’s fosters so we are automatically set up for that.
Kristen has already seen her vet to get her records transferred over there, she will see the eye specialists in a couple of weeks to see if we can’t help her with her vision, making her more comfortable.
Kristen took Smoochie home on Saturday and reports that she’s doing very well, she is eating like a pig and says she sleeps literally all day long and all night long. Just what Smoochie needed.
She is a special case indeed, and the rescue will continue to provide for her financially for everything she needs for the rest of her days.
We will get lots of updates on this special girl and I’ll be happy to share them…
About Smoochie:
We were asked by a shelter in Athens Texas if we could help with this big girl. She was a stray and she has had lots of babies so she was most likely discarded to the streets after she was all used up. The shelter that her at 9 nut of course it’s a guess. They feel like she’s partially blind, she’s heartworm positive, she has masses on her body and she’s just in terrible terrible shape that will require lots and lots of medical professionals to help her get healthy again. We just couldn’t say no to her. They said she’s just a big sweetheart good with dogs and even cats.
Her new life begins now as Ricky has picked her up and is driving her back to the sanctuary today.

Welcome to Dog Ranch Rescue Smoochie🥰

UPDATE 8/26/2022
Soo…. we need to talk about Smoochie, she is in rough shape I have told all of you that before, she is a very old girl and she needs a ton of vetting and we aren’t even sure if we will do all of it due to her age.
Here’s the problem and then I’ll explain what we want to try and do. Smoochie weighs 120 pounds, and she is completely emaciated. We have tried everything and Smoochie doesn’t gain weight and this is a problem because shes not healthy enough to even begin surgeries on her. Smoochie will never rest at the sanctuary if people are around, she is always up and active and shes too old and too skinny for that. If nobody is there she just goes to sleep and rests but we have people there from 8 am to 8 pm. Smoochie is eating a ton of food and we can’t feed her more because if we do she vomits.

Here is what we think Smoochie needs, she needs to be in a home where she can rest and slowly gain the weight she needs to gain, Smoochie is medical nightmare so if anyone wanted to take her into their home she would be what we call a fospice. In other words she isn’t adoptable and she has a ton of medical issues. We are reaching out to see if someone who would be local would want to be Smoochie’s person, all of her expenses, would be paid by the rescue, literally anything and everything she needs so it wouldn’t be a financial commitment for anyone you would just be offering her a soft place to land for however long she has left in her life.

UPDATE 8/18/2022
So a little info about Smoochie, she is a medical nightmare we all know that, covered in skin infection, covered in masses, arthritis throughout her body, almost blind, entropic in all eyes, Heartworm positive and completely emaciated.
Behaviorally she is a very happy girl who wags her tail all the time, she loves people, she is great with other dogs but we are struggling to get her to gain weight and we are working on it.
One other caveat for her is she hates being locked up in a den, she gets very upset and we just don’t want that for her. Emma opted to give her a big blanket and let her sleep in the main room without having to be locked up in a den and how did that work out?
She’s a very happy girl, she sleeps quietly on her blank, she never potties in the building and she doesn’t get into any kind of trouble whatsoever.

We don’t even know if we will ever be able to complete Smoochie’s vetting, we don’t know if the time will ever come that she would be ready for adoption, Smoochie may very likely live her life out at the sanctuary because we don’t know how long that will be, she is a very old girl, and if that’s the case that’s just fine with us too.

UPDATE 8/11/2022
Smoochie went off to see Dr. Rolfe today for his thoughts on her medical issues. First and foremost he feels like all of the masses on her body are most likely benign which was great news. This girl is an absolutely wonderful happy sweet, sweet girl but she is in very rough shape and we need to slowly try and get her healthy again. Her skin is covered in infection so it will be quite a while before she can have any surgery, she’s emaciated at 120 pounds so that should tell you how big of a dog she is. Her breasts have masses that will need to be removed, she needs to be spayed, her eyes are a disaster needing entropian surgery on uppers and lowers on both eyes, she’s Heartworm positive and she’s a senior so we will have to be prepared for a very long process to try and get her healthy.

She will be a guest at the sanctuary for a very long time so get used to seeing lots of pics and videos from this sweet girl while we work on her.

UPDATE 8/6/2022
Smoochie had her initial exam and it was filled with bad news. She is heartworm positive, she has horrible entropian in both eyes, bottom and top lids that have scratched her eyes her whole life and has taken most of her vision from her with the damage. She is covered in skin infection but the worse part are the masses all over her body. Dr. Reno thinks they are hemangiosarcoma. She did a needle aspirate and all that comes out is blood and lots of it. This is a typical presentation of hemangiosarcoma with masses, all of her breast chains are filled with masses as well. She has taken chest rads and sent them off to radiology to see if cancer has spread to her lungs. She is consulting with Oncology on their thoughts. Smoochie is a senior and the question at this point is what do we try to do if she only has a short time to live. If we were to tackle all of her needs she will be a very, very expensive dog to vet.
It’s one of those things where we just have to wait for information and make decision as we learn what might be next.
We do know that she is a very happy silly tail wagging girl and as long as shes comfortable then that’s what matters the most.
