I will close the night with this adoption, this dog was so close to us making a decision to euthanize her, so many strikes, so many difficulties but we kept hanging in with her and now it has paid off.
With the support of our incredible village, Dog Ranch Rescue has celebrated many success stories—and now we can add Birthday to that list. She arrived with a double prolapse, something we’ve treated before, but she also tested positive for Parvo, which complicated things. Because we couldn’t bring her to the Sanctuary or place her with Millie, who was already taking care of other dogs, Dr. Roach stepped in and took her to his Oklahoma facility, where he had the isolation space and expertise to manage both issues.
Thankfully, her Parvo remained asymptomatic, but the prolapses proved stubborn. She was spayed, which typically resolves one, and pursestrings were placed for the other, but they continued to recur. Ultimately, she underwent a double plexy surgery—and that finally did the trick.
While all of this began back in October, applications poured in for her because she’s stunning and full of personality. Still, we had to wait for her medical outcome before moving forward. Once she arrived at the Sanctuary, we quickly learned she was done with kennel life and needed a home environment. That led us to the Maddocks family in San Antonio—both work from home, they have a lively Frenchie named Little Man to match her energy, and Buster, an older English Bulldog who’s happy to relax alongside her.
Their introductions went beautifully, and Birthday is now settling into her new home. Her family understands she needs a gentle recovery period and is fully committed to giving her that. They’re still choosing her new name, but one thing is certain—her life from here on out will be filled with love and comfort.
UPDATE. 11/25/2025
Birthday is doing fantastic, never did she have any symptoms of Parvo and she has now been spayed and has fully recovered and is now in a home with foster mom Trish. She is a sweetheart and we are so happy that she made it through this terrible time.
So I got an update late last night that they were able to reduce her swelling enough to put her rectum and her vagina back inside and stitch it in to hold it.
I spoke to Dr Letcher early this morning and so far Birthday is holding her own. She’s been given pain meds, broad spectrum antibiotics and Monoclonal antibodies. Right now she is eating and is feeling pretty good, they have killed all of her fleas and treated her for internal parasites. She remains on fluids of course and so far has only had a small amount of diarrhea.
We cannot be sure of course what will happen in the coming days, will she take a turn and dive down with the illness or will maybe the fact that she’s not a little puppy work in her favor and her symptoms remain mild. We just don’t know, I’ve asked for her to stay in the hospital even though the bill will climb, she has the best chance there for them to respond to her needs immediately and try and save her life.
We do need donations and this might be a long haul hospitalization and if she makes it long enough she can then have surgery for both a spay and a Colopexy but for now we have to take this 24 hours at a time while she remains in the hospital.
For this moment I’m going to celebrate the win for the past few hours and hope and pray she has more wins and more birthdays to come.
UPDATE
ust 48 hours ago I was on the phone trying to figure out a way to not have to euthanize her. In that 48 hours she has proved to everyone that the decision we made to not quit on her was the right one. She has defied the odds against her and says “ hey you Parvo, you’re not gonna kill me”
Birthday has had her bloodwork return to normal, she eats like a little pig, she has no vomiting, no diarrhea, and no symptoms.
So what do we do with her? She’s still got Parvo, she’s still contagious. We cannot risk her at the sanctuary, and she will need to be isolated for several weeks.
Enter my phone call with Dr Roach in Oklahoma. I spoke to him on the phone and explained what we needed and he said drive her up here to me, we will isolate her and care for her for however long she needs. So hallelujah Emma will drive her up there today and she will stay with him for however long it takes for her to be well enough to be spayed, and well enough to at some point put all of this behind her, and be adopted to someone who will never allow her to suffer the way she has.
