Claude’s big, beautiful presence was exactly what drew in Henry and Deb Bowers. As experienced Dogue de Bordeaux owners, they’d previously adopted Remington “Remmy” and Godzilla “Rocco.” After the heartbreaking loss of Remmy, they knew they’d eventually be ready to welcome another gentle giant into their lives.
When that time came, they reached out and made the drive down from Nebraska with Rocco for a meet & greet with Claude. Their plan was to spend a few hours with him and return the next morning—but it turned out they didn’t need that long. Claude and Rocco were neutral toward each other, which is actually a great result in dog introductions. Not every meeting sparks instant friendship, and neutrality often means a peaceful coexistence is well within reach.
So this morning, they loaded everyone into the car and began their journey back to Nebraska—with Claude officially part of the family. His name will stay the same, because let’s face it—Claude is a cool name for a cool dude.
We’re so excited to see updates on Happy Tails and watch this new chapter unfold!

About Claude:

8/15/25 Pupdate:

His notes at the shelter said they gave up trying for eye meds, he was a bucking bronco and they couldn’t do it.
It helps to have the right eye meds that make him more comfortable, but it also helps to have lots of good employees who know how to get it done, and make it pleasant.
No more bucking bronco for Claude.

8/7/25 Pupdate:
We had Claude examined at the vet to learn about the source irritation of his eyes. Turns out this poor dog has zero tear production. He has absolutely no tolerance with you messing with them and this will be a work in progress. He will need a medication called Tacrolimus which will encourage tear production. He will need to learn to tolerate that because this will be for the rest of his life. We are conjuring up a plan now to condition him to this being a pleasant experience for him. It was noted at the shelter that they had given up trying to put eye meds in. It doesn’t help that none of it was what he needed. A diagnosis is critical but we can’t fault shelters for not having the resources to get to the bottom of everything that ails the thousands of dogs crammed into shelters. They do the best they can with what they have to work with.
Stay tuned as we iron out this wrinkle for Claude.

We became aware of this boy in Kansas last week, we knew Ricky was going to be out of town with Terrie so we tried to figure out another way to transport him. He has been in a shelter for a month and having a hard time declining mentally. As luck would have it Ricky and Terrie were on their way home and going through Arkansas where he had been partially moved to and said they will just swing by and get him. Poor boy has come down with illness and is snotty and goopy in the eyes so he will go into isolation, it will be cool and quiet and calm so he can decompress from the shelter and get healthy. I believe he is estimated to be about 3 years old and is a handsome boy.
