Sometimes in rescue you fall completely in love with a dog and in this case it was a huge girl named Clyde. It all started down in Florida where Clyde’s owner passed away and she found herself in a shelter. A nice man adopted her to get her out of the shelter, but he could not keep her. At that point we were contacted here in Texas and asked if we could possibly come for her. A cross country rescue is never easy and when it comes to a dog weighing over 150lbs it is even harder. Enter the picture is our now good friend Jessica Fletcher. Jessica was sitting waiting in a doctor’s office to go in and she saw our post about possible help getting Clyde from Florida for Terrie and I (Laura) to meet up with her about ½ way and she immediately raised her hand and said I will do it. I was driving in my car and looked down at her message and for some reason I was moved to immediately reach out to Jessica. There was something in the way she worded her reply that I connected with and I sensed I could trust her and felt her kindness. Within minutes we had a plan and Terrie and I would take off in our dog bus to meet her in Jackson, MS. Jessica had about 14 hours with Clyde and Clyde immediately bonded to her. That’s the kind of dog she is. She falls for her humans fast and you better look out because she’s not going to let anyone or anything come between her and her beloved. Jessica hugged us and kissed Clyde goodbye and I could tell it was really hard on her to say goodbye. I had no idea that within 12 hours I would feel the exact same way. Clyde was such a good girl and rode in between Terrie and I all the way back to Texas. She would kiss Terrie all the way up her body to her head! She loved sausage patties and she spit out a powdered donut. I couldn’t believe that a dog who was about 40lbs overweight would turn down a donut!
At my home I have two 14 year old Chihuahuas and 2 two year old Frenchie/Bostons. I was just not in a position to bring Clyde home even though I wanted to so badly. I just loved her so much. Jessica would text me from time to time asking if I had found the right home for her and I had not. She had a few applications, but nothing ever seemed to click in place. As I was driving to my office last week my heart was heavy worried that maybe I might have to drive her back to Mississippi and see if Jessica and her wife Megan might want to adopt her since they both loved her as much as me. I was very anxious about what was going to happen to her. I pulled into my parking garage and looked down at my phone and there was THE EMAIL from Richard and Kelly Green who had previously adopted our female DDB Casserole in 2022. You might remember that story, Casserole smuggled in one baby boy from the puppy mill auction. We thought she had a blockage as she was acting sick and thought she was bloating…lol so we took her to the ER and in the middle of the night the veterinarian called me and said “she had a blockage all right, it’s one baby boy”!!! We have laughed about that night for years. I called Renee and I told her that the blockage was a puppy and we both about died. We named her little boy Smuggler!
The email said:
“Hello Laura! Hope you all are doing well! I did not see Clyde until today. My wife gets your post from the website and was telling me that you all had male & female puppies. We are very interested in Clyde & would love to adopt this big beautiful girl if she is still available. When we adopted Casserole from you all she was 4 years old as well. She is a big girl now about 110lbs. She is the sweetest but shy girl. She absolutely loves people and other dogs, but she has always been shy about meeting them. Once you love her she is your best friend for life. She loves us as much as we love her. When Tank & Zoey passed away we thought our hearts would never heal but Casserole came along and our hearts were mended. We would love to see these two girls get together. She reminds us so much of Zoey. She was also a big beautiful wonderful girl!
You just cannot say enough about this breed. They will steal your heart
! We look forward to hearing from you Laura!
Sincerely Richard!”
My reply to him was an excited one:
“OMG Richard and Kelly you have me in about tears this morning! I was driving to work really worried about finding a wonderful home for Clyde and then when I turned my car off I looked down and saw your email!!!”
Today was the day that Richard and Kelly have made the trip up to meet Clyde in person. It is their wedding anniversary and Clyde will be a present to themselves. I can say for certain that she truly is a gift! Clyde will be going home with them to live a wonderful life in Bryan, TX and a huge parcel of land that is fully fenced and just ready for her to explore. All kinds of critters and smells for her to enjoy. Just last week her new sister brought a live armadillo in the house! We wish you such a wonderful life precious girl, the tears are flowing because I probably won’t ever seen you in person again, but you are one in a million and I know the Greens will love you with all of their hearts.
Goodnight everyone
