Latest Update:

They cried, we cried, and for a moment it felt like we should all be holding hands singing kumbaya. Okay… Fella’s adoption wasn’t quite that dramatic, but it was pretty close.
Fella had been with us since early January. He originally went to Oklahoma to the 405 Vet Clinic with his melting corneal ulcer and stayed there while recuperating, then moved in with foster mom Trish. He had a few applications along the way, but none were the right fit, and we struggled to get a clear sense of his personality. Eventually, he was transported down to the Sanctuary—where we quickly learned he needed to be an only dog.
That’s when Shannon McGuire and Christopher Leeds of St. Louis reached out. They had rescued an 8‑year‑old Frenchie two years ago, and heartbreakingly, he passed away suddenly at the beginning of June at 10 years old. They’re the kind of family who pours everything into one dog at a time, giving them the fullest, happiest life possible. They wanted to honor Murray, their first Frenchie, by opening their hearts to another dog in need—and Fella was absolutely that dog.
They were so excited that although their adoption appointment was set for 10:00 a.m., we warned the Sanctuary team to be ready early. Sure enough, they rolled in at 9:40, two harnesses in hand and smiles all around. We love adopters who show up with that kind of joy, especially for a dog who’s been with us for so long. We always say every dog has a perfect home waiting—we just have to find it.
Their first act of love was giving him a new name: Theodore “Teddy,” inspired by Teddy Roosevelt, who famously damaged sight in one eye during a boxing match. It’s thoughtful, meaningful, and fits him perfectly.
Teddy’s life is forever changed in the best possible way, and we can’t wait to watch him thrive on Happy Tails.
Happy life, Teddy.
About Fella:
Yes, another one.
No place for him to go so Ricky drove him up to Oklahoma. His eye is lost, a melting corneal ulcer for how long? Who knows, listed as a stray but dropped off by a person. Was that his person? We don’t know but he’s not a stray dropped off anymore.
Dr Roach will remove this painful eye right away and take care of whatever else ails him.
Fella is looking high and low out there for his only dog home. He doesn’t like other dogs. He may be able to do fine with some females but that’s a challenge and one we don’t take lightly. Perhaps a very close local home where he could be tried out but certainly no long distance adoptions with too many unknown facts.
