About Gage:
April 18 Pupdate:
This boy Gage has been a big undertaking and we had to put all of our heads together with how we wanted to proceed. You might remember he was a stray with a. cast on his leg that did absolutely nothing for him with the break being above the cast. The shelter said it just needs to be amputated and I kind of agreed but always with lets seek out opinions on if we want to do that. I hesitate much more to take off a front leg rather than a back, Frenchies carry a lot of weight in their chest and hopping around without a front leg isn’t as easy as losing a back leg.
We sent him up to Oklahoma for Dr. Roach to take a look at. You can see the break in the top of his leg, he felt like we could go either way, take the leg off or try and repair it. The problem with repairing something like this in its location, not knowing how old the break is will it hold. He consulted and orthopedic surgeon who said by the x-ray it looks like its trying to heal, the gap is trying to form a bridge, we could confine him to only leash walking and wait 6 weeks and see if it heals, if it didn’t we would need to amputate. We could take him to surgery and still and try and pin it and plate it and rehab him the same way for 6 weeks and hope it fixes.
WE weighed it out and felt like we needed to just try and repair it, I didn’t like waiting for 6 weeks to heal on its own and if it doesn’t then we lose the leg.
The surgeon took him to surgery yesterday and he said it was pretty unstable in there and the pistol bone was too small to get the 3 screws in that he would need to stabilize both the bend and the rotation which needed to be done so he had to do an outside fixation in it, this has the rods going into the bones in 3 places in order to accomplish that task.
Dr. Roach and staff are going to rehab him for us for 6 weeks which is a huge, huge task and one that would be very difficult for us to do here at the sanctuary and a challenge it would be for Millie as well, knowing he needs follow up x-rays and bandage changes.
We are grateful they are willing to do that for us and we hope that he has a positive outcome knowing that it may not turn out.
Whoever had this dog, that slapped on this dumb cast that accomplished nothing and then turn him out as a stray we just don’t know but they certainly didn’t do him any favors.
I will keep you updated as he goes through this recovery.

This dog has appeared in our feed over the last week, he was found by someone searching for his owner, neighbors said he had been in the neighborhood for a few days roaming. The assumption was somebody cared about him because he had a cast. He eventually went to the shelter with no luck finding his home. That is where he had an x-ray that showed his leg is broken severely in his humorus so the cast does absolutely nothing for a break that high. Whomever put it on knew nothing about his injury, and instead just put this on his leg. He cannot bear weight on it and I am sure it is very painful.
The shelter felt confident that this leg will need to be removed. We sent Ricky to pick him up this morning and he is driving him up to Oklahoma where Dr. Roach will take over his care, get him neutered and most likely remove his leg. I shall update you when I learn more.
