“If you have been following the story of sweet, shy Guinevere then this news might not be very surprising…
Hi, my name is Jennah LaVerne and I have worked for Lone Star Dog Ranch and Dog Ranch Rescue since October 2021. I spend most of my time at the Ranch (boarding side), which is where I got to meet Guinevere, the Dogue de Bordeaux. When she first came in, as you all know, she was nearing the extreme side of being socially shut down. She thrashed and rolled on a leash, resulting in her soiling and injuring herself in the process. As well as flinching and avoiding you when you’d go to pet her or even moved towards her. But I saw something in her that first day, and I knew she was special.
The first week or so with her, we started to grow a bond, she didn’t seem too scared of me touching her and even let me kiss her face and touch all over her ears, paws, and mouth. That was when I started trying to walk her on a leash. It took really only a couple of tries before she got the hang of it (she’ll do pretty much anything for a hotdog). She is still not the biggest fan of the leash, but that’ll come with time and many fun adventures to associate with that dreaded leash. Now here we are, a little over a month into Gwen’s journey and I am proud to say she has been able to successfully walk on a leash for me in multiple settings on multiple occasions.
I knew she was special when I met her, but I quickly came to realize that she was more than special, she’s my dog and I knew that I wanted her and needed to adopt her. I knew that the routine of being at the ranch has helped her blossom and that being surrounded by balanced dogs in a pack was something that she would need to continue to progress and knowing that I could offer her that is one thing that I am so grateful for. But she will not only have a balanced pack during the work days, but she will also have two new siblings at home, Clover the Miniature Australian Shepherd and Beesly the black cat. Who are more than willing to show her the ropes. Guinevere’s new name will be Clementine but will also go by “Clem”.
I am so excited for Clementine to start her new life with me and join my little pack. She will be spoiled with lots of fun time at the ranch, all of the yummy treats (hotdogs included), and tons and tons of love. We look forward to seeing you all on Happy Tails!
Here’s to a new beginning, Clementine! 💞🍊
About Guinevere:
Ricky drove this morning to pick up another owner surrender, this girl is 3 years old and her owner says she got her from a backyard breeder 2 years ago, she is skittish and she’s unable to take care of her anymore. Upon arrival we got to see just how skittish she is, she panics on a leash, she drops and rolls like a gator, biting the leash and bit the side of her mouth, pooping, peeing and then subsequently vomiting. A dog like this will take tons and tons of work to try and help her, she will be a project dog that is for sure, but we have seen this before many times.
She is not spayed and we will take care of that right away. That is all we know about her as of now, she will come and stay at the ranch now that we have a little more breathing room with space.

Welcome to Dog Ranch Rescue Guinevere

UPDATE 9/6/2022

Jennah working with Guinevere on a leash. She has her dog Clover with her to encourage a balanced mind for Guin to mimic. A handful of hot dogs encourages her to take her mind off of the leash that she has deemed so scary and has reacted so negatively with. One step at a time, a few steps here and there and before you know it, she will think this leash isn’t so bad…

UPDATE 9/4/2022

A little update on Guinevere. If you watched our podcast about all of the Bordeaux’s you would have seen the video of this girl absolutely flipping out on a leash, rolling biting, peeing and vomiting.

She loves Jennah at the ranch, follows her everywhere and is getting more and more sassy. We have been putting a leash on her just to get her used to it going in and out of her den at mealtimes. Today Jennah gave it the first attempt to move her about in the office. Miles and miles of improvement, she’s got a long way to go but it’s nice to see the light come on and the fear dissipate.

UPDATE 8/25/2022

Guinevere is one of those special case dogs. Very frightened, very shy, except she loves Jennah and Makala at the ranch, both young girls, she gravitates to them readily, follows them around and will lay right next to them when they sit. We will hope for a home for her with a female that will make her comfortable, don’t get me wrong she is a project dog, she will require tons of patience, tons of it, she will require work and will require someone willing to put in the work. She has yet to walk on a leash for us and for a dog that weighs 75 pounds that is huge challenge.

UPDATE 8/12/2022

Guinevere is a worried girl, a shy girl, a girl that flips out on the leash but in a few days she’s doing pretty well, she comes inside and outside she moves around with other dogs and she even lets us touch her sometimes. Poor girl has never been shown how to cope and how to learn to trust.

You guys all know how this works you’ve seen it before with dogs like Chili and Ruby and Abraham, give them space, give them time, let them think, and the dogs will help rehab them faster than any one single person could.

UPDATE 8/10/2022

After Guinevere came in so terrified on a leash and bit her tongue, Travis took the opportunity to get hands on her and try and calm her mind that nobody is going to hurt her here. Dr Reno is prescribing some meds for her to help ease her stress and anxiety and for now when she gets transported to the vet she will be carried in a crate. She’s not ready for the leash yet, she will need lots and lots of work and thankfully the dogs at the ranch will help her psychologically faster than any human could.
