KISS adoption take 2.
When Katie and Matthew Hitchcock from Godley, TX saw that KISS had been returned and read the story of her being afraid of the teenager in the previous home they immediately knew that they would apply for her. They have no kids in their home. She will go live with a couple of DRR alumni, a Bordeaux named Gretchen (fka Kelly) and a French Bulldog named Beverly Pancakes (fka Bonnet). The Hitchcock’s also have two English Bulldogs – Maggie (pictured) and Rico. They were looking for a playmate for DDB Gretchen and think that KISS will be a perfect addition to their pack. We were a little worried that she might be afraid of Matthew too but nope she gave him loads of happy kisses.
They also foster for Lone Star Bulldog Rescue so KISS will get to interact with foster dogs just like she did at Maternity Manor. Her new name will be Roxanne. We are so happy for this sweet silly girl and can’t wait to see updates of her on the Happy Tails page.

Sweet girl is so very afraid, I just want to tell her it’s going to be okay. We knew this girl was going to be in this auction for a few weeks now so no matter what she would be coming to us even if she was the only dog we could rescue. She didn’t know it but her fate was sealed as soon as she was listed.
All the catalog says is Dogue De Bordeaux AKC red born 4/17/17.
Our bidder said she would give kisses anytime you came to say hello to her.

UPDATE 8/29/2021
We are all feeling pretty emotionally crappy out here and this story doesn’t help.
Our baby bears mama KISS has been returned. Just like Jolene, her mama KISS is a very sensitive dog and no matter how long they tried, KISS was and is terrified of their teenage son and his friends. She reminds me so much of Jolene, sensitive and worried, but sometimes its just not a good match so we asked the family to please return her.
Yesterday she came back to stay with Jenn. Maternity manor had been closed for weeks and weeks now with getting past the distemper fear and we thought it would be best to send KISS back to Jenn where she stayed for quite sometime and is very familiar and happy to be back with Jenn. She is such a great dog and we will always remember her for being our bear pups’ mama.
We have to start from scratch and try again to find her a home where she will be happier. KISS gets along perfectly with all dogs big or small but she would prefer to not have any teenagers in her home.
sigh.
UPDATE 4/8/2021
Lordy it was a very long night and of course with complications that had us fearing the worst. KISS went into labor around 5:00 pm and began having a very green gooey discharge that had all of us very worried. Everyone agreed that she needed to go to the ER.
When she arrived we could see the babies were very high up in the uterine horns and that there were 3 viable pups. Dr. Murray gave her some oxytocin to see if she could deliver them herself and waited about 5 hours with no luck and we knew she had to go to surgery. We of course were very worried with a very large dog with very large blood vessels heading into a surgical procedure. Dr Murray said the green goo was coming from one dead pup that was basically rotting in there but the three pups were very strong and seemingly very healthy. Dr Murray also said that KISS had clearly had c-sections before with lots of scar tissue and adhesions. This leads you to clearly understand why she was sold at an auction, because all of that is way too much overhead expense, and too much trouble in your supposed money making livestock.
The next concern is KISS did aspirate a little when she was waking up and had a bit of a cough. She’s been put on antibiotics that are safe for the babies to hopefully catch that early.
Dr Murray said these pups are very strong and act like pups that are 2 weeks old so that’s the great news.
What we have are 3 beautiful baby bear girls 
Jenn will get them home and weigh them color collar them and we will then introduce them by name.
Phew….. 3 baby girls bears yay!!!
UPDATE 4/7/2021
KISS was scheduled today to go see Dr. Reno to have an x-ray and see how many pups she has. Jenn texted me this morning with this info:
“So……KISS doesn’t normally pant in the car. I noticed that she was panting when I woke up this morning. I joked with the vet techs that they may be having pups today. They just called to let me know she is now panting and nesting. Her temp has dropped so we are on puppy bear watch for the next 24 hours. Jenn is taking her home so she can rest there quietly.
UPDATE 3/29/2021
Jenn giving us a little update on how mama KISS is doing at maternity manor.
KISS is settling in. She hasn’t had any accidents in the house. She is napping a lot. Even outside she will roam around for a few minutes and then lay down for a sun bathing snooze. She gets along with all the other dogs and doesn’t have any issues with the teeny tiny Upbeat, Unity, or Peeps. She is eating well. I don’t think she will be running around playing with Chip any time soon but that’s ok, he has recruited Easter for that.
UPDATE 3/24/2021
We have rescued multiple Bordeaux’s at the auction with them “supposedly” bred. It’s always a lie and not once in at least 15 of them have they ever been pregnant. KISS came to us without one word of being bred, not a single thing about her “running with a male” nothing…
Wouldn’t you know it, this big girl smuggled in baby bears. KISS is in fact pregnant. right now it looks like 4 to 5 baby bears but we will reassess that count with actual x-rays in a week or so and get a good idea if that is accurate.
KISS will be going home with Jenn on Saturday as she will be due to have her babies in about 2 weeks and Jenn likes to get them settled and get a baseline temperature on her mamas ahead of time to understand when the temp drops before labor.
Nice job smuggling in these babies KISS. She has a family waiting for her and they have said they will happily wait until she’s finished raising her baby bears.
UPDATE 3/18/2021
We can never rely on the information that comes to us from dogs sold at auction. They sell them supposedly bred and they are not, they sell them with no information about them being bred and they are. I can’t tell you how many mama dogs we have had that came to us smuggling puppies on board. KISS came to us with not a single word about her perhaps being pregnant but today she went in for her spay and Dr. Reno didn’t like the way she looked, she is thick in the middle her breasts are swollen and she was highly suspicious that she might in fact have smuggled baby bears out of the auction house. X-rays were taken and it appears that there are babies in there that are about 40 days old or so, too early for skeletons but white tubular blobs are present that look like puppies . We will ultrasound her next week but right now We are highly suspicious that KISS will be heading to stay with Jenn at Maternity Manor.
