There was one dog at the Sanctuary who absolutely knew his name — mostly because we had to call it out so often. Mateo was our wild child, full of energy and personality, and he stayed with us longer than a typical 7‑month‑old simply because he needed a very specialized surgery on his mouth before he could be cleared for adoption. Until the vets knew exactly what they were dealing with, we couldn’t move forward on finding him a home.
Back in mid‑April, Heather Kendrick submitted an application for a completely different dog, then emailed about another one, but both of those pups ended up going to other families. So when we reached out to ask if she was still interested in adopting from us, she didn’t hesitate — she said YES. And as it turns out, Mateo was the perfect match for their family.
He’s rambunctious, hilarious, and ready for all the attention he’ll get from Dad (Joel), Mom (Heather), Blakely, Brynlie, and his two fur brothers, Sonic and Knuckles. Sonic, at 5, is the calm one, while 3‑year‑old Knuckles should give Mateo a run for his money — and hopefully tire him out in the process.
Even with the Sonic the Hedgehog naming theme already in place, the family decided to keep the name Mateo since he knew it so well. It just fit.
Mateo, we hope you have the happiest life — far away from the puppy mills and right in the middle of your new family’s love. We know they’ll share updates on Happy Tails, and we can’t wait to watch you grow up.

4/29/26 Pupdate:

Mateo is going to be one of those dogs with lots of expense to get him healthy. First of all his ALT is 3 times the normal number, we are running more tests on him to see if we can figure it out.
Then we found this enormous mucocele in his mouth, Dr. Reno says it goes all the way across his jaw and portrudes up into his mouth. This will require a surgeon who has already been reached out to for what would need to be done. We will have to get some answers about his liver first. He is also being put on canned and or soaked food only with this big thing in his mouth.
Good Grief he is only 5 months old. 😣

Only 5 months old and so lucky to get away from this, the merle in Frenchies seems to be on the decline, and certainly not making them the money it used to.
