AJ—short for Almond Joy—was with the Bernard family for 7 years, 7 months, and 13 joyful, spunky, and unforgettable days before she crossed the rainbow bridge. She was feisty, fun-loving, and cherished every moment of her life.
While still grieving AJ’s loss, Tim and Aimee reached out to say they might be open to another dog—but only if it felt right. You see, AJ was a piebald Frenchie, and as the Barnes’ say, “once you go piebald…”
So when we rescued Ocicat, we immediately thought of them. We reached out to Aimee and encouraged her to keep an eye on our page as new dogs were announced. The moment she saw Ocicat, it was love at first sight—stars in her eyes.
Ocicat, however, came with a bit of a reputation. She was a handful with other dogs, and we were upfront about that. But the Bernards weren’t deterred. “She sounds just like AJ,” they said.
Tim made the long drive from Colorado with his father to pick up Ocicat—now Coco—and bring her home. It wasn’t his first rescue road trip; he’d made the same journey for Almond Joy and for Paul Sheldon, the little Frenchie with two broken legs who was lovingly nursed back to health by Millie.
During the Sanctuary meet & greet, Aimee joined via FaceTime to meet her new girl, which was such a sweet moment.
Coco is now home, and we’ve already received a few texts letting us know she’s perfect.
Well then—have a perfect life, Coco. From all of us at DRR, we couldn’t be happier for you
