On June 14, 2025, Ricky picked up a discarded breeder release dog—a quirky little soul who would come to be known as Smoke. After 138 days, 43 posts, one eye enucleation, and one palate surgery, Smoke received not one but two wonderful applications. (More on that 2nd application in a few days). And now, we can finally say: Smoke is no longer a rescue… he is home.

Jason and Stephanie Grubb’s application stood out immediately. They checked every box—fenced yard, loving home where he’d be the only dog, stellar vet references, and most importantly, they reached out specifically for Smoke. During their meet & greet, Smoke was his usual self: a little eccentric, more fond of cats than dogs, and wildly enthusiastic about meeting new people. Jason and Stephanie were smitten.

Although they couldn’t take him home that day due to dog-sitting commitments, they made their intentions clear. They added both the meet & greet and the adoption to their calendar and promised Smoke they’d be back on October 28th to bring him home. When that day came, the Sanctuary was filled with joyful tears—Smoke was deeply loved here.

We gave the Grubbs a few days to settle in and make sure everything went smoothly in their Fort Worth home, where Smoke now lives with two feline siblings, Guy and Gal. The update? He adores them—and they adore him. He’s gentle and respectful, letting the cats sniff him while remaining perfectly calm.

We wish the Grubb family all the happiness in the world as they begin this new chapter with Smoke—who will proudly keep his name. We can only hope we’ll get to follow his journey on Happy Tails. Sending hugs and heartfelt gratitude from all of us at the Sanctuary!

So, we have decided it would be best to place Smoke in an only dog home, he does love the cat so that helps. He is very undecided which dogs he dislikes and it’s too hard to predict, so it’s easier to just say let’s find him a home where he is the only one. He loves Vlad, and we all joke and say Smoke was probably a cat in a previous life. He loves solitude, loves to quietly watch the world go by, and would love a quiet calm home with a family to call his own.

This sweet pup is full of love and ready for his forever home! Smoke is full of personality , Fun and always up for a swim in the pond or water bowl . He’s been waiting patiently—could you be the one to make his dreams come true?

7/28/25 Pupdate:

Smoke aka Smokey

It’s been a week now since the pallet surgery and Smokey is starting to feel like the youngster he is (2-3yrs old). No lie… first few days were hard.. food just didn’t want to stay down but he’s turned the corner and feeling a lot better. He’ll be eating multiple meals of soft food for about another week then he’ll be getting back to a normal mealtime.

Smokey goes Wednesday to get his stitches out of the left eye.. if you look closely you’ll see that the swelling is almost gone. Once a little hair grows back you probably won’t even notice it.

If anyone needs a walking buddy he’s the one! He loves to go walking and would be great company!

Another breeder release, another dog covered in skin infection, Ricky drove out to pick him up. He was discarded by them but we will find someone to love him forever.
